The intro –
Next week is the big Latvian Song and Dance Festival happening in Riga. If you want to know more about it click here, otherwise stay here and read my stuff that is somewhat remotely connected to that festival.
I have a brother and he is going to take part in the festival. He is dancing. Actually, the whole class of his from school is.
So anyhow… the post is about nicknames and now i will tell you why –
Since the festival is a week long, my brother will be gone and living god knows where for the same amount of time. A lot of the stuff will be provided by the festival sponsors but since thousands upon thousands of people will have exactly the same stuff, everybody is advised to somehow brand their stuff, put tags or whatever, write their names with markers on everything they own.
Almost two months ago when he (the brother) found out that he and his crew is accepted to go and perform at the festival, he came to me with a A4 sheet of paper with his nickname written on it. He wanted me to write/draw it because apparently i could do it better. I giggled and fobbed him off…
And today i realised that i have to do it… only because i will need a favour in return.
It only took me 5 minutes to do and 20 to print (don’t ask), but that made me think and remember myself at his age. What did i do when i was 11/12? What kind of nicknames i came up with? I know i was once a DJ ananass (DJ pineapple) but it didn’t stick for long. I don’t remember having much of a nickname problem at that age. I didn’t have internet accounts or internet in general for that matter where i would need to come up with a nickname. Friends called me by my name and it was fine. Seems like life was a lot simpler back then.
Later, of course, things changed…
This is his nickname that i did. I don’t know what it stands for nor how to pronounce it. I made it with no questions asked… i let him have this one so that i could make fun of him when he is older.
And what is your experience with nicknames? 🙂
